Pietro Cavoti Civic Museum

In the center of the city of Galatina, in Piazza Alighieri, in the former convent of the Dominican fathers, on the first floor of the current Palace of Culture "Zeffirino Rizzelli", there is the Pietro Cavoti Civic Museum, originally located in some rooms on the ground floor of Palazzo Orsini, today municipal seat.

Born in the thirties of the twentieth century, thanks to the impulse given by Francesco Bardoscia, a young exponent of the Galatian aristocracy who loved culture and art and who began to collect numerous historical memories, including documents and ancient finds.

In 1931 the lawyer Raffaele Torricelli dʻAvetrana, grandson of the scholar Pietro Cavoti, with a public testament, donated the Cavoti collection to the Municipality of Galatina, including the entire collection of his uncle, who went on to increase the already existing collection. In the same period, the esteemed artist Gaetano Martinez donated more than thirty works to the Municipality and these donations were followed by others such as those of the artists P.Baffa, G.Maselli, I.Montini and others.

In 1936 the Municipal Museum was officially established, which was named after the artist Pietro Cavoti, whose Fund still represents the richest and most conspicuous patrimony of the entire collection.
